Working for an IT consultancy I am mostly helping out clients getting their software development projects right. A typical situation that I encounter at customer site is this:

So you want to set up your development environment, right? Umm, ok, first install A,B,C, tweak some configuration file here, don’t forget to set an env var there, and then it should just work.

Nope, it does not. And it gets even further…

If you are learning Ruby you have definitely have to check out “Why’s Poignant Guide to Ruby”, which is probably the most fun to read an introduction to the Ruby programming language ever.

But who is this guy called “_why” and why shoud I read his guide…?

Since the time I started working with Vagrant a few years ago some plugins have become really essential and indispensable for me:

1. vagrant-cachier – caches packages downloaded within the VMs on the host
2. bindler – Bundler-like plugin management for Vagrant. Only for Vagrant < 1.4 :–((
3. vagrant-proxyconf – dead easy proxy configuration for the VMs

If you are using Chef or Puppet together with Vagrant, the following plugins should also be of interest for you:

I’m happy to own a shiny new Octopress based blog now. It is as lean and simple, yet comfortable as it possibly can get: cms-free, git-based, markdown syntax, and with web-based editing comfort.
